Brief History:
Until the 60s, Puerto de la Cruz in the north of the island of Tenerife, had a monopoly on the tourist enclaves. In the mid 60s I had such a strong opponent who still has not been recovered. It all started at the time when the British, Germans, French, Scandinavians, Dutch and especially Belgians chose the coast of Tenerife to enjoy the sun and beach. And that's when the seed sprouted redneck tourism, Ten Bel, one of the most famous and most important complexes of the Canary Islands where thousands of visitors and residents spent their summer days.
The Belgian citizen Michel Albert Huygens was the visionary who sought by different municipalities the ideal place to develop your project. At first even bought land in Arico, but bureaucratic obstacles dashed that possibility. He was not discouraged and found a new option, this time in Costa del Silencio (so he called this area D.Manuel Fraga Iribarne when he was Minister of Information and Tourism), next to the beach of Las Galletas, one of the most important areas of the time in Arona. There was the perfect spot and to take with him, he had to negotiate with the owner, Jose Antonio Tavío. Huygens began construction on the 80,000 square feet he had acquired.
Ten Bel was born in 1963 and was named in honor of Tenerife and Belgium. Its development is progressive. He began with the first complex, which he called Caravel, but he joined seven other Eureka, Bellavista, Gemini, Drago, Frontera-Spring, Marvel and Alborada, which still make up and try to maintain the dignity of the whole construction.
It grew to 5,200 tourist beds in its heyday in the early '80s Ten Bel pioneered leisure on the island and had the first mall in the South, one of the most modern and prosperous Canaries where more than 70 establishments. Now, most of these facilities are closed. Latin Night of your living Whale was also a benchmark.
Their spaces were connected by small roads surrounded by parks and manicured gardens.
